The first lighthouse in St. Joseph was built on shore in 1832, stationed at the mouth of the St. Joseph River on Lake Michigan. The pier as we know it today began construction in 1836 on Tiscornia Beach. In 1906-1907 the current lighthouses were built on the pier but they were decommissioned in the early 20th century by the federal government. Ownership was transferred to the City of St. Joseph in 2013.

A temporary fundraising committee was formed in 2014 to restore the lighthouses to their 1932 configuration. The committee raised $2 million and the project was completed in 2016. Now maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers the beacons are still active in use for aiding navigation, operated by the US Coast Guard. The pier and both lights have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993.

More information on the permanent fund to help maintain the lighthouse can be found at the City of St. Joseph’s website.
