About the Bridge

The Houghton-Hancock Bridge, also known as the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, was built in 1875 as a wooden swing bridge. A steel version of the bridge was built in 1895 and was almost damaged by passing ships, leading to the construction of the current dual level lift bridge in 1959. It was declared a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2022.
